In a pandemic mad-dash through the supermarket, you grabbed a couple of coconuts from the depleted produce section. Now that you’re safely home, what to do with these rugged beauties? We’ve got just the Ghetto Tech project for your inner Survivor. Let’s build a Coconut Chalice.

A chalice is a type of water pipe, like a bong, but with a major difference. A chalice delivers far more smoke, which is cooled and filtered through the water in the coconut. Cannabis is packed into a “kouchie” (koh-chee)— a large bowl that sits on the top of the chalice. Once lit, enjoy the smooth inhale.

Materials:

1 coconut

1 1/2″ plastic hose x 12″ inches long

1 kouchie (we used the leg of a chair, drilled out—any large, airy bowl will do.)

1 metal downstem (standard equipment at head shops, they are the metal tubes that sliders fit into)

Beeswax*

Tools:

Drill

Time

Patience

Step by step:

Step 1: Drill a hole in the coconut for the kouchie.

Step 2: Drill a second hole for the hose.

Step 3: Drill a third hole to use as a carb.

Step 4: Carefully dig out the coconut meat through the holes. Go gently—the coconut shell will break if you’re not careful.

Step 5: Fit the metal downstem into the bottom of the kouchie. Make sure it’s long enough to dip into the bong water.

Step 6: Insert the kouchie into its hole. Beeswax is useful to help seal things up.

Step 7: Insert the hose into its hole.

Step 8: Adjust the final fittings. There’s going to be a lot of MacGyver-like innovations required to get your chalice parts to fit right. Use that beeswax!

Step 9: Pack the kouchie full.

Step 10: Smoke till you feel like you’re on a tropical vacation.

*Beeswax seals well, gets hard when it cools, is organic and reusable. When your chalice needs maintenance, just break it into pieces, clean and reassemble again. If you don’t have beeswax, use whatever you have on hand.
